Weather: Sunny and cool. The sun came out a little later, and it did warm up, but the desert morning began in the 50's. The day became very interesting mid-morning as a dust storm blew in. Winds in excess of 30MPH with whitecaps. As soon as it blew through, the lake calmed back down. John

Methodology: Fishing from a Ranger bass boat, we threw topwater plugs in the morning and switched over to drop-shot rigs in the afternoon.

King of the Boat: The day ended in a draw, as we both managed to pull in 16 small largemouth. All were a pound or less.

Fish of the Day: None. The cool morning tempatures and the dust storm threw all of the fishing patterns off kilter.

Guide Information: Chris Love, from The Hook Up Outfitters worked hard to keep us on the fish. He was able to to issue fishing licenses right on the boat. This meant we did not have to stop and buy them on the way..

John’s Thoughts on the Day: This was our first guided trip together. It was on the 40 minute drive back to Phoenix that we formed our plan to Fish Fifty. We had fished together a few times in Virginia, but seeing that it was possible to squeeze in a fishing trip during our business travel opened all kinds of new posibilities.

The scenery was amazing. It would have been very easy to fish this lake several days in a row. The fishing was a little tough. Smaller fish mostly. The guide was having to work it to get us to where the fish were. The cool morning and the incoming dust storm probably accounted for the difficulty. In the early afternoon, once the storm had passed, we were able to hook up more consistently using a drop shot rig. It is rare for us not to want just a few more casts, but it was hard to pack it up knowing that we had finally hit on the pattern.

Both of the landscape photos were taken during the Arizona trip. The browser and monitor do not do the colors justice.
