Weather: We experienced incredible weather during our week. It was sunny with temps in the 60’s and only drizzled one afternoon. All the guides indicated "that never happens this time of year”.

Accommodations: We stayed at an all-inclusive (excluding alcohol) “resort” in Kenai. Located right on the Kenai River, the location could not have been more ideal. As John will explain further down, it was a 5 minute boat ride to fishing on the river. The cabins were very comfortable. The meals and social gathering tent was at the end of the driveway. I describe it as a high end fish camp. It would not be confused with The Four Seasons Hotel, but it was the perfect Alaskan experience.

The management and staff of Foster’s Alaskan Cabins could not have been better. The off-site excursions were perfectly planned and expertly executed and the food was top notch. On check-out morning, we found that all the fish we were taking home had been deep frozen and packed for shipping or for us to take to the airport ourselves.

If you are considering an Alaskan excursion, we highly recommend you contact Cyndi and Jason Foster.

Alaska!

Once upon a time, way back in the pre-Covid days, the Fish Fifty project was working on a trip to Alaska. We always knew that Alaska, Hawaii and a handful of other states were always going to be a challenge due to sheer geography. Fortunately, one of us had a brother who was recruiting to fill slots on a fishing expedition to Alaska. Unfortunately, Covid shut that down and the plans went on the shelf. Thankfully those plans had new life breathed into them and we found ourselves headed to Alaska July, 2023!

Alaska Disclaimer
We have decided to let the pictures do talking on this trip. It would not be possible to adequately describe the Grandeur of Alaska - it is staggering! Everywhere you looked, the scenery, scale, and wildlife, all illuminated in 22 hours of daylight, overwhelmed the senses.

We stayed at a fish camp on the banks of the Kenai River that had a lot of return customers. The facilities and food were top notch.  Several evenings we had moose walk through camp. Fishing was a 5-minute boat ride away. The daily trips featured a lot of options. We spent the first day “flossing” for Salmon on fly rods. There was not a day that our 8-person group did not catch our limit of 8 fish each.

Day two was a trip for Halibut in the Gulf of Alaska. We boarded a boat in Homer Alaska and made the long run out the gulf. We were entertained with otters, seals, walrus, and breaching Wales on the ride out. John caught the big fish of the day, an 85lb halibut with an assist from his brother. Reeling these monsters up from 220 feet was tough! Mike’s big fish was so onery, it had to be dispatched with a .410 blast to get him in the boat !

After another day of salmon fishing, a day trip to Skillak Lake to troll for salmon followed. There were no fish caught but the scenery and beautiful weather were enjoyed, nonetheless.

The following day Mike opted to take another Halibut trip while John did the float plane flyout trip. We boarded a float plane and flew across the Gulf of Alaska and landed in a small river and wading for Silver Salmon who were taking bait. The float plane experience was incredible!!
